Eithne
Eithne N Bhraonin
Enya, who's real name is Eithne N Bhraonin (which means Eithne, daughter of the Bhraonin [Brennan] Family), was born on May 17, 1961 in the village of Dobhair (Dore), located in the region Gaoth Dobhair (Gweedore) in County Donegal (Dn na nGall), which is the northmost county of the Republic of Ireland. She has four brothers and four sisters.

Already at age of four or five, she attended music contests - the family has always performed music and her father still has live music in his tavern "Tabhairne Leo" (Leo's Tavern). It is located in Meenaleck between Crolly and Annagry, close to Eithne's home town.

At age eleven, Eithne went to a boarding school - a convent school in Millford, Co. Donegal.

In 1980 she joined the world-famous band "Clannad" which also included her sister Mire, brothers Ciarn and Pl, as well as two uncles, Pdraig and Noel. She appeared as a singer and keyboard player on two albums, Crann Ull and Fuaim before she left.
Enya wanted to make her own music; Nicky Ryan left Clannad where he was a technician and started producing with her. His wife Roma writes the lyrics for Enya's music. The three of them is known by fans as the Triad.

In 1985, she wrote most of the tracks for the David Puttnam film "The Frog Prince" (US title "The French Lesson"). Enya performed two tracks herself but they are not featured in the film, they're only on the soundtrack.

By 1986, Enya had made a number of tracks for a BBC documentary series, "The Celts". Some of them were released as an album a while later - self-titled "Enya" under the Atlantic New-Age label. The track "Boadicea" of this album is used in the filmatisation of the Stephen King book "Sleepwalkers".
This track was re-released in 1992 as "The Celts".

Watermark came out in 1988 and by that time she had been asked by Rob Dickins, Chairman WEA Music UK, to work with him. The hit "Orinoco Flow" made her famous world-wide.

Comedian and movie producer Steve Martin likes her music and he used many tracks from Watermark in his film "L.A. Story".

In 1992, Shepherd Moons was released and the track "Book of Days", which was originally in Irish, was transformed into the title track of the 1992 film "Far and Away" with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. This meant another hit for Enya.

Four years later Enya released The Memory of Trees which took two years to make. "Anywhere Is" made it to Top of the Pops, and in many countries it hit the top of the charts.

On her 35th birthday in 1996, some of us incarnated fans decided to send her a present. We had a florist to make a violin of roses and sent it with a portfolio of greetings and pictures.

The next album? Who knows... it will probably be near the end of the Millennium before a new one is released, since her music is a while in the making. No digital voice reproduction is made so she sometimes sings the same part 4-500 times to get the right voice. We hope that the next album will be as beautiful as the others.
